'Let's make Newcastle a Fairtrade Town'

06 Feb 2012

We invite you to an initial public meeting of Fairtrade Newcastle, which will take place at 7:30pm - 8:30pm on Tuesday 28 February in the Newcastle Centre.

The purpose will be to establish a 'Let's make Newcastle a Fairtrade Town' campaign, so tackling poverty by enabling disadvantaged producers from poor countries to receive a better deal. Experience elsewhere has shown that working towards Fairtrade Town status can bring together neighbours, groups, the local council and businesses towards a common goal and a shared achievement that everyone can celebrate.

The hope would be to secure the support of the local community, the business community, local schools, churches and community associations and Down District Council.

In due course, it may be possible to combine the promotion of Newcastle as a Fairtrade Town with 'buy local' promotional activity to encourage ethical shopping in the town. This approach may be of particular interest to local schools, churches and community associations.

At the meeting on the 28th, there will be a short film, some sample Fairtrade produce, informational materials and a resolution to establish a steering group for the initiative. The event takes place at the start of Fairtrade Fortnight (February 27 - March 11). More information on Fairtrade Towns can be found here (http://www.fairtrade.ie/index.php?id=26( and here (http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/get_involved/campaigns/fairtrade_towns/default.aspx).
